Syed Babar Ali completed his early education from Aitchison College Lahore and went on to study Chemical Engineering at the University of Punjab. Later, he pursued further studies in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, USA.

After completing his studies, Syed Babar Ali returned to Pakistan in 1951 and started his career as a Chemical Engineer at Pak-American Fertilizers. In 1953, he joined his family business, Packages Limited, which was established by his father Syed Maratib Ali.

Under Syed Babar Ali’s leadership, Packages Limited grew rapidly and became one of the leading industrial conglomerates in Pakistan. He introduced new technology and innovative management techniques in the company, which helped it to expand its operations and diversify into various industries.

In addition to his business ventures, Syed Babar Ali is also known for his philanthropic work. He is the founder of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), one of the most prestigious universities in Pakistan. He has also established the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering at LUMS, which has become a leading center of excellence in science and technology education in the region.

He was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, one of the highest civil awards in Pakistan, in 1991.
