Syed Babar Ali completed his early education from Aitchison College Lahore and went on to study Chemical Engineering at the University of Punjab. Later, he pursued further studies in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, USA.

He is the founder of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), one of the most prestigious universities in Pakistan. He was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, one of the highest civil awards in Pakistan, in 1991.
